Guillermo Castillo
Hello and welcome to my page, my name is Guillermo Castillo but everyone calls me Will. I was born in Colombia, South America. At just 6 months old my mother, in pursuit of a better life, left Colombia for the United States. I was raised by my grandparents until the age of five when my mother finally got the paperwork for me to immigrate to the United States. I was raised in Queens, NY.
By the age of 19 I had two daughters and was working towards my degree. Two years later the attacks on 9/11 happened. I felt a sense of pride and responsibility to this great nation. I joined the US Army and was active for ten years. I served in two deployments. On my last deployment my truck was struck by an IED killing my driver David Kirkpatrick and my gunner Eddie Tamez. I lost a leg, developed a traumatic brain injury and of course experienced Post Traumatic Stress. As a result to my injuries I spent two years at the Army Hospital Walter Reed learning to walk and speak again.
Once I recovered, I went straight to work for Homeland Security. I thought I had it all figured out, but I didn’t.
My depression and anxiety became so bad that I left my job and isolated at home. Without knowing I was becoming an addict and feeling of failure, loosing my men and being labeled a hero had become too much, and I attempted my first suicide. I ingested as many drugs and pills as I could and said my good bye to my mom. Through Gods mercy I didn’t die and was baker acted through the VA. I did a month there while I got my meds in order and therapy. I tried to overcome things on my own and once again I failed and decided that I just couldn’t and was going to use a round to end it all. Through the mercy of God I didn’t do it and called for help! Once again, I was sent to the hospital and that’s when I gave my life to God. Through him it sparked hope in me and with that hope I started my journey again towards not be being productive but to survive. I just wanted to not want to kill myself. The closer I got to God the more hope grew. I started to meet people what would shape my life. With God and my family by my side I was able to overcome and open a new chapter in my life.
This new chapter led me to meet some great people like Kim Seevers and the staff at Lake Placid. They introduced me to the sport and helped me grow within it. With hard work and passion I made team USA. In 2023, I have so far won 3 gold medals and one silver along with winning gold in the Para Sport World Cup. Between 2018 and 2022, I won three National Championships, a gold medal in the 2020 Empire State Games, and two third place finishes at the World Cups in Germany and Lake Placid. I am currently the captain of Team USA and 2022-2023 over all World Champion.
