Castillo claims bronze in Lake Placid's Para Bobsled World Cup

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (Feb. 7, 2020)- Guillermo "Will" Castillo (Orlando, Fla.) claimed bronze in Lake Placid's Para Bobsled World Cup yesterday to lead Team USA. It was his second medal of the season, and his second career medal on the Para Bobsled World Cup circuit.
"I am a product of great people around me," Castillo said. "I hope to continue to get better and represent this great nation with the honor and integrity it deserves."
Castillo is a U.S. veteran and a Purple Heart recipient. He was injured in a roadside bombing on his second deployment, and Castillo once said he "found his identity again in bobsled."
Para bobsled races use monobobs, where just one person is in the sled. The races are also mixed gender, with men and women competing against one another.
The American was in fourth position after a first run time of 1:00.27 yesterday. Castillo rallied back in heat two with the second best time of 1:00.46 to earn the bronze medal with a combined time of 2:00.73.
Dave Nicholls of Israel was yesterday's winner with an aggregate time of 2:00.05, followed by Canadian Lonnie Bissonnette in second with a total time of 2:00.13.
Steven Jacobo (Gardnerville, Nev.) secured his second top-10 finish of the season with a 10th place result. Jacobo slid to the finish in 1:00.90 and 1:00.72 for a cumulative time of 2:01.62.
Sarah Frazier-Kim (Houston, Texas) finished 16th with a two-run total of 2:02.32, and Frederick Evans (Pooler, Ga.) was 19th in 2:04.05.
Very heavy snow today led to the cancellation of the second heat. Castillo was again the top American, this time in eighth with a downtime of 1:00.72.
Bissonnette finished far ahead of the field with a time of 59.65 seconds to win by 0.76 seconds. Nicholls finished second in 1:00.41, and Israel Blanco from Spain was third in 1:00.45.
Frazier-Kim moved bettered yesterday's result to 11th with a time of 1:00.87. Frederick finished 16 in 1:01.55, and Jacobo was 18th in 1:02.61.
